HASSRA Climbing Club

The HASSRA Climbing Club is offering a bike maintenance course in Quarry House, Leeds.  The course will interest anyone wanting to learn how to service their own bike and acquire the know-how to undertake common repairs.  The day course assumes no previous maintenance knowledge so is suitable for beginners, but will also offer an opportunity to cover more advanced skills later in the day for those interested.

The course will run from 10am – 4pm Saturday 16th October with time for a packed-lunch break and a coffee break in the afternoon.  The course fee is £65 pp, but with the HASSRA 30% reduction members pay just £45.50 pp.  The course tutor – Steve - also runs Chasing Trails and comes highly recommended.  Steve’s website is www.chasingtrails.com

Skills covered in the course will be:

·   checking, repairing & replacing chains;

·   replacing brake pads - V brakes & disc brakes

·   checking, repairing & replacing chains;

·   replacing brake pads - V brakes & disc brakes if on bikes present;

·   replacing brake cables;

·   adjusting gear indexing;

·   replacing inner & outer gear cables;

·   removing & refitting rear derailleurs (connects chain and gears);

·   straightening rear gear hangers;

·   adjusting headsets (bearings that control steering);

·   basic wheel truing;

·   tightening/adjusting cranks;

·   some trail-side 'get you home' fixes; and

·   advice on tools & spares to carry.

There might also be time to look at replacing bottom brackets, cassettes (rear cogs), replacing front derailleurs & chain-rings. Steve is open to suggestions on the day, so more advanced skills will be down to what people feel they need.

It is recommended that you work on your own bike but bikes can be provided at no extra cost. Most of the skills will be acquired using a small multi-tool which can be provided.  Other tools and bike stands will also be provided. Brakes will be removed and re-fitted so you might like to bring new spares to fit (although new V-brake pads will be offered on the day at a competitive price).  Any inner or outer cables needed will be provided free of charge.

Please let Duncan Gray (DUNCAN.GRAY@DWP.GSI.GOV.UK) know by Friday 27th August if you’d like to undertake the course. Places are limited.

Later this year we will also be offering an advanced mountain bike maintenance course (probably in December).  This will build on the beginner’s course but will also act as a stand-alone course for those with some maintenance experience. Skills covered will include Gears, Transmission and Trailside repairs.  If you think this might be of interest to you please email Adele Hirst on adele.hirst@talktalk.net

Full details will be given later in the year.
